Has the West been sleeping?
In his article for Stratos military science journal, Ambassador Theodor H. Winkler argues that the West has been sleeping on military and strategic issues since the end of the Cold War.
The West is falling behind China and Russia in many areas of advanced military technology and the sheer availability of military hardware such as tanks.
This strategic failure could result from the widespread belief in ‘the end history’ following the Cold War.
Ambassador Winkler calls for a quick shift in thinking regarding war, security, and politics in general. He also offers practical steps to avoid strategic sleepwalking by Western societies.
For Switzerland, Ambassador Winkler proposes a comprehensive security approach. This includes more military spending, less dependence on Russia and China, and more overall autarchy in key areas like cyber and pharmaceutical.
