The event is part of a series of regular briefings the Geneva Internet Platform (GIP) is delivering for diplomats at permanent missions and delegations in Geneva following digital policy issues. It is an invitation-only event.

Diplo and the Geneva Internet Platform will host a briefing and dialogue exploring the interplay between the UN80 Initiative, UN processes on digital governance, and artificial intelligence (AI).

In March 2025, the UN Secretary-General announced a UN80 Initiative ‘to rapidly identify efficiencies and improvements in the UN System, review the implementation of all mandates given to the organisation by member states, and conduct a strategic review of deeper, more structural changes and programme realignment in the UN System’. Since then, seven UN80 clusters were created under the coordination of a dedicated Task Force to advance work in these three main areas, as detailed by the Secretary-General in a recent briefing.

As discussions advance on how to move towards an ‘even stronger and more effective United Nations that delivers for people and is tuned to the 21st century’, our event will reflect on two main questions:

  • What implications could the UN80 Initiative have for digital governance processes across the UN and its specialised agency, including in Geneva?
  • Could AI play a role in making the UN ‘stronger and more effective’? And if so, what key elements would need to be considered to ensure that AI is leveraged in line with core UN principles (e.g. impartiality, inclusivity)?
