Celebrate Diplo’s anniversary with us!

On 17-18 November in Malta, we will celebrate 15 years of DiploFoundation and 25 years of research and training on the Internet and diplomacy with a conference on The Future of Diplomacy.

As part of the celebrations, we invite all our alumni to share messages to mark our anniversary. How have our courses or programmes impacted your academic or professional life? Have you met other alumni face-to-face, and what is your fondest memory? You can also help inspire others: What was your most successful professional moment? You can post messages on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/diplofoundation), or tweet your message with #Diploturns15, or post directly on our conference website (https://15years.diplomacy.edu/#messages). Photos are welcome, too. In recognition, messages posted by 20 October will enter a draw. The author of one message, randomly drawn, will be awarded an all-expenses-paid trip to Malta to participate in our conference. In addition, Diplo will waive the conference fee and cover local expenses for alumni who will join us in Malta.

Upcoming study and training opportunities

Deadline extended: 2018 Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy

Diplo has extended the deadline for applications for the 2018 Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy, and the Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy with a specialisation in Internet governance. These unique postgraduate programmes, offered in co-operation with the University of Malta, include a 10-day residential workshop in Malta followed by 16-20 months of online learning. Visit the Master in Contemporary Diplomacy webpage to read more. Scholarships covering 20-50% of the Postgraduate Diploma fee are available for applicants from small and developing states. The programme starts on 5 February 2018. The application deadline is 30 October 2017 for international applicants, and 15 November 2017 for Maltese applicants.

Malta scholarships

Thanks to support from the government of Malta, partial scholarships are available for applicants from developing countries to attend upcoming Diplo online courses. These scholarships cover 30-70% of course fees and can be applied to most online courses in 2018. Browse our course catalogue and contact us at admissions@diplomacy.edu for further information. Diplo and GIP sessions at the Geneva Peace Week

DiploFoundation and the Geneva Internet Platform are organising two sessions in the context of the Geneva Peace Week 2017, both will take place on 9 November. The first session (09:30-11:00), organised in the context of the Geneva Digital Talks, will explore the need for a treaty to prevent cyber conflicts. The second session (11:15-12:30) will address the potential of big data in conflict prevention. Registration is open and available on the event pages.

Diplo participates in workshop on cybersecurity capacity building

The event, an initiative of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) in collaboration with New America, will take place on 19 October. The workshop will address the gap between cybersecurity and development assistance. The goal is to bring together professionals from both fields in order to create a sustainable, constructive, and mutually beneficial working relationship in the area of cybersecurity capacity building.

Digital policy newsletters: Now in French and Spanish

Issue 24 of the Geneva Digital Watch newsletter, covers the latest digital policy updates in July and August, is now available in French, and Spanish. Download your copy! 

The translations reflect the Geneva Internet Platform and DiploFoundation’s mission to engage even more actors in digital policy, through different languages. More multilingualism efforts will be undertaken to bring digital policy closer to practitioners, wherever they are.

Internet governance in October

Join us on Tuesday, 31st October, for our end-of-the-month briefing, which will highlight the main developments in digital policy in October, and what to expect in the upcoming period. The briefing is a monthly appointment with digital policy practitioners from around the world, taking place on the last Tuesday of every month. Participate online or from Geneva.

What’s been happening in Diplo’s blogsphere

Diplo alumni Rawl Prescott looks at The importance of data in the CARICOM region and finds that CARICOM has recognised the importance of statistics to decision-making, good governance, accountability and improved standards of living of the people of the community for some time now. He points out that with the 2030 development agenda, the need for statistics and data will increase and additional efforts will be needed.
