Geneva Digital Watch newsletter – first issue

The first issue of Digital Watch is out. This is a new monthly newsletter on global and Geneva digital policy developments. This monthly summary will complement our regular last-Tuesday-of-the-month briefings and the evolving comprehensive online observatory, to be launched by the Geneva Internet Platform in September.

17-18 June: Jurisdiction and dispute resoluion in the Internet Era: Governance and good practices

This two-day event, organised by the University of Geneva in cooperation with the Geneva Internet Platform (GIP) and the Geneva Center for International Dispute Settlement (CIDS), will discuss current issues about jurisdiction and dispute resolution mechanisms related to the Internet and to information and communication technologies (ICTs). More info.

19 June: Law of the Sea – Law of the Internet? Inspiring analogy?

The analogy between the Internet and open sea has been around for some time. More recently, Admiral Rogers, the new director of the US National Security Agency (NSA), suggested that the Law of the Sea should inspire future regulation of the Internet. Dr Alex Sceberras Trigona, former Maltese minister of foreign affairs, will address the question of possible analogies between the Internet and Law of the Sea. Join us in Geneva on 19 June. Which Internet governance developments took place in June? How are they shaping future developments, and what can we expect in July? Every last Tuesday of the month, the Internet governance digests provide a 'zoomed-out' update of the major global IG and digital policies developments. Upcoming study opportunities

Call for nominations: Asia-Europe Public Diplomacy Training Initiative

Diplo, the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), and the National Centre for Research on Europe at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, announce a call for nominations for a short face-to-face training programme on Public Diplomacy. This programme is part of the Asia-Europe Public Diplomacy Training Initiative which aims to improve public diplomacy efforts between the countries of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) process. The programme is financially supported by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland and ASEF.

The training will be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 24 to 27 August, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand. Please note that this call is open only to ASEM country nationals, and that the priority will be given to candidates nominated by their MFAs. Training costs, including travel to Bangkok, are covered by the organisers. You can read more about the programme and apply online.

Call for applications: Online Diploma Course in Humanitarian Diplomacy
 
The next session of the Humanitarian Diplomacy online diploma course, offered by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in cooperation with DiploFoundation, will start on 1 September 2015. This 12-week course, led by Ambassador Christopher Lamb, will extend the knowledge base and develop practical skills of current and future practitioners in humanitarian diplomacy and policy. This course is currently offered in English, however participants who are more comfortable with French will have the option to write and submit some course assignments and their final research project in French. Partial bursaries are available for applicants from developing countries who work in the humanitarian field. The application deadline is 20 July 2015. Applications open for 2016 Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy

Diplo is now accepting applications for the 2016 Master/PGD in Contemporary Diplomacy, and the Master/PGD in Contemporary Diplomacy with an Internet Governance specialisation. These unique postgraduate programmes, offered in cooperation with the University of Malta, include a 10-day residential workshop in Malta followed by 16–20 months of online learning. Visit the Master in Contemporary Diplomacy webpage to read more and to apply. Scholarships covering 20–50% of Postgraduate Diploma fee are available for applicants from small and developing states. The programme starts on 1 February 2016. The application deadline is 1 October 2015 for international applicants and 15 November 2015 for Maltese applicants.

Malta scholarships

Thanks to support from the government of Malta, partial scholarhships are available for applicants from developing countries to attend upcoming Diplo online courses. These scholarships cover 50-70% of course fees and can be applied to any online course in 2015. Please browse our course catalogue and contact us at admissions@diplomacy.edu for further information.

Internet governance for MENA region

From data privacy and cybersecurity to content regulation and net neutrality, policymakers and advocates face complex challenges related to the Internet. What background knowledge is necessary to understand these complex topics? How can civic actors engage on these issues and effectively advocate for policies that benefit Internet users? What are the unique challenges and opportunities for civic actors in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)? Diplo and Hivos, through the IGMENA programme, are working together to offer the third annual online course on Internet Govenance for the MENA region, starting on 3 September 2015. The course creates a unique opportunity to gain knowledge, skills, and tools to address these issues; communicate with actors from government and the technical community; and to influence policy outcomes. Tuition fees are fully covered through fellowships from Hivos. Read more and apply by 27 July.
