Data Diplomacy: Updating diplomacy to the data-driven era

2 May 2017, 12:30-14:00 CEST
Salle de réunion BGA012 – Bundesgasse 28, Bern

Data science and big data have become common concepts, yet very little is known about the ways in which diplomacy can adjust to the emerging data-driven era. What is the impact of statistics and big data on diplomacy and international relations? How can big databe used by ministries of foreign affairs and UN-agencies? And how can these organisations themselves become more data-driven? DiploFoundation, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, is conducting the Data Diplomacy Project to find answers to these questions.

During this brown bag lunch, organised by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Jovan Kurbalija, Director of DiploFoundation and Head of the Geneva Internet Platform and Ms Barbara Rosen Jacobson, Data Diplomacy Project Lead, will provide a briefing on the preliminary results of the research project. The participants will furthermore be encouraged to brainstorm about solving the gap between diplomacy and big data, and on ways to make diplomats better aware of the possibilities and challenges of the data-driven era.
