Diplomatic dialogue: WSIS+20 review – Global South priorities

On 9 July 2025, Diplo and the Geneva Internet Platform hosted a dialogue on ‘WSIS+20 review: Global South priorities’ for Geneva-based diplomats from permanent misisons of countries from the Global South.

The meeting offfered diplomats an opportunity to engage directy with the co-facilitators of the WSIS+20 process: H.E. Mr. Ekitela Lokaale, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations, and H.E. Ms. Suela Janina, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Albania to the United Nations.

The dialogue focused on the following questions:

  • How has the WSIS vision of a ‘people-centred, inclusive, and development-oriented information society’ progressed in the Global South? What gaps remain? 
  • What are the most important challenges associated with the implementation of the WSIS vision that should be addressed in the years to come?
  • What priorities should guide the future implementation of the WSIS vision, also taking into account emerging trends in the digital space?
  • What suggestions do you have to support the development of the WSIS framework (WSIS Action Lines, IGF, WSIS Forum, UNGIS etc.)?
  • What feedback do you have on the Elements Paper and which issues do you want to see prioritised in the upcoming Zero Draft?
  • What expectations do you have from the WSIS+20 process overall?
