Workshop: Diplomacy and the power of the unsaid

29 March 2017 - 30 March 2017

Geneva

Event description

What makes one set of words more convincing than another, and how can language best be put to work in the service of diplomacy, international relations, business, and all other aspects of contemporary life?

Diplomacy and the power of the unsaid

1.5-day Workshop | 29 – 30 March 2017

This workshop focuses on the unsaid in diplomatic communication. Its primary objective is to alert participants to the power and particularities of implicit communication, which plays an important role not only in diplomacy, but in everyday communication. Topics covered include ambiguity, connotations, gaps, indirectness, assumptions and presuppositions.

The workshop addresses an area of communication which has been largely overlooked but is nevertheless essential to master if we are to achieve our objectives effectively. Active participation in a series of exercises is encouraged, culminating in a HARDtalk simulation.

The workshop will consist of two sessions, as follows:

  • Wednesday, 29 March, 9:30-16:30 CEST (9:30-16:30)
  • Thursday, 30 March, 9:30-12:00 CEST (9:30-12:00)

Read the full programme and check the workshop schedule.

The workshop is free of charge and will take place in Auditorium De Mello, WMO Building, 7bis Avenue de la Paix, Geneva.

Interested in the topic? Join our event on Implicit Communication in the Digital Era on 30 March at 16:00-17:30 CEST (14:00-15:30 UTC) as well!
