Bitly, the people who shorten lengthy links and make them more manageable, recently looked at what they're calling the 'half-life' of links, i.e. 'the amount of time at which this link will receive half of the clicks it will ever receive after it’s reached its peak'. They look at Tweets, Facebook posts, YouTube posts an direct links and have figured out that the half-life of the average Bitly link is just 3 hours! According to their survey, the mean half-life of a link on Twitter is 2.8 hours, on Facebook it’s 3.2 hours and via ‘direct’ sources (like email or IM clients) it’s 3.4 hours.
