The Diplomatic and Foreign Service sector, like so many others, often finds itself playing catch-up with the early adopters of social media.

There are serious issues at stake but 21st Century communicators have to engage with people where they talk to each other, which increasingly means social media. 

Michael Calcott, Director General of the Canadian Foreign Services Institute, talks in this interview about their early thinking on the tricky issue of how to develop policy for a medium whose impact comes in large part from its immediacy, informality, openness and honesty. He also describes how they are responding to the challenge raised by those, often in senior positions, who find it difficult to engage with the medium or recognise its transformative nature.
