Better than I could ever do so this blog by Amanda Glassman from the Center for Global Development discusses the pitfalls of distributing scarce medical resources among many claimants with different conditions when treatment costs are grossly disparate and the outcome more than uncertain.

Beyond the specifics of the case it underscores the need for decision takers to see beyond mere "effectiveness" to the hidden costs of foregoing alternatives.
