The term ‘cloud computing’ is used to describe a recent trend in the computer industry based on the use of computer applications as services delivered from huge server farms (a collection of computer servers maintained by an enterprise to accomplish server needs far beyond the capability of one machine). Thee first glimpse of cloud computing is already available with the move of e-mail from our hard disks to mail servers (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo!) and the use of online word processors (Wiki, Google services). Social networking applications such as Facebook and blogs have further accelerated the trend towards cloud computing. More and more of our digital assets are moving from our hard disk to the cloud. Thee main players in cloud computing are Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook; all either already have or plan to develop big server farms.
