About Malta

The Maltese Islands offer an exhilarating contrast of colours: the azure of the Mediterranean, the mellow honey-coloured limestone which characterises the architecture, and clear skies. The Islands are a feast for the senses.
Everywhere you go, a unique historic sight awaits. Temples, palaces, cathedrals and forts provide a living history you can almost touch.

How to Get Here

The Maltese islands lie virtually in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93kms south of the Italian island of Sicily. Malta is just a few hours’ flying time from most mainland European cities and has excellent intercontinental connections. Choose from scheduled services or charter flights, many of which offer a convenient departure point from European regional cities.

Weather

Malta’s climate is strongly influenced by the sea and is typical of the Mediterranean. The Islands have a very sunny climate with a daily average of five to six hours sunshine in mid-winter to more than 12 hours in summer.

Winters are mild, with the occasional short chilly period brought about by the north and north-easterly winds from central Europe.

Average temperatures in February range from a high of 16
C to 9C and average rainfall of 62 mm. For the latest forecasts check out: http://www.maltaweather.com

Banks & Credit Cards

Banks are normally open between 08.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and up to 11.30 a.m. on Saturday. Some banks work longer hours.

Exchange Bureaux at Malta International Airport are open 24 hours a day. International bankcards are accepted and foreign currency is easily exchanged. Banks, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and exchange bureaux can be found all over the Islands.

Many hotels and larger shops and restaurants can exchange currency. The exchange slip is required to change local currency back to foreign denominations on departure. Exchange rates offered by hotels, restaurants and shops are generally inferior to those available at banks.

Most hotels and restaurants, as well as many shops, accept Access, American Express, Carte Blanche, Diners Club International, Mastercard and Visa.

Immigration

Citizens from the following countries do not require a visa to enter Malta.

Those countries not on this list will have to apply for a visa. Please contact your nearest Maltese High Commission or Consul for further information.

Visa Costs

A normal one-time entry visa to Malta costs Lm10 while a multiple re-entry costs Lm20. A transit visa costs Lm5 and multiple transit, Lm10.

Under 18 year-olds get a 50% ‘discount’. Nationals of countries who require a visa to enter Malta should obtain these 15 days before travel from a Maltese Embassy or consulate.

Where neither is available, the conference organisers can process the visa application on your behalf against an administrative fee of Lm10. Please check with the conference organisers if you have any queries.
