THE BEGINNING OF KNOWLEDGE IS THE DISCOVERY OF SOMETHING WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

DiploKnowledge Introduction

In today’s fast changing world diplomats are often called on to deal with unique situations: problems which they cannot prepare for or read about in diplomatic manuals in advance. Knowledge—a combination of information, training, experience and intuition—is what enables a diplomat to act appropriately in unpredictable situations. In fact, diplomacy can be described as an intellectual activity based on the on-going processing and analysis of information leading to the creation of knowledge, which can be applied to decision-making. DiploKnowledge promotes projects focusing on research about the importance of knowledge in diplomacy.

Conferences [more]

We host annual conferences addressing various aspects of knowledge and diplomacy. Over recent years distinguished groups of international experts have met in Malta to discuss topics such as modern diplomacy, IT and diplomacy, knowledge management in diplomacy, language and diplomacy, and web-management in diplomacy.

Portals [more]

DiploPortals are comprehensive and interactive information sources on specific topics related to diplomacy and international relations. We offer you the results of our research, collections of resources, and the chance to become involved by sharing your own knowledge and experience.
Virtual Embassy [more]
We are currently conducting research on the feasibility of the “virtual embassy”. You are invited to add your views to our collection of contributions on the topic from leading diplomats.

Language and Diplomacy [more]

Studies of diplomacy usually concentrate on the message rather than the means. However, examination of language use in diplomacy can lead to a better understanding of the way diplomacy functions and why some diplomatic processes are more successful than others. Through careful and critical attention to various aspects of diplomatic language we can improve our understanding of both the explicit and implicit messages world leaders and other political figures send out, and improve our own ability to communicate in the most effective and appropriate ways.

Knowledge Management [more]

Recent developments in technology and management theory offer new tools and methodologies for knowledge management. Diplomacy is often slow to adopt practices from the private sector, but may benefit greatly from these new tools and techniques if they are properly applied.
