IT4Youth in Palestine
Basem Masry attended Diplo’s 2000 Postgraduate Diploma in IT and Diplomacy. At the time he was working at the Ministry of Planning and Cooperation of the Palestinian National Authority. In 2001 he became “Chief of Party” for a four-year, $4 million, mainly USAID funded project aimed at enhancing the learning skills and employability of Palestinian youth through computer-based information technology. Working with the
Welfare
Association, the International Youth
Foundation, and locally with the Ministries of Education and Local Government, the
IT for Youth project built modern computer labs in 14 schools in remote underserved villages in the north of Palestine, between Jenin and Nablus, and a Regional IT Centre to serve children from the villages in the evening and after school hours. This project reached 30,000 boys and girls aged 11 – 24, and also provided training for teachers and youth mentors. “By offering opportunities for enhanced education and job training to youth in isolated rural areas, IT4Youth gives the younger generation the chance to broaden their horizons, communicate with one another, and play a positive and constructive role in society. The programme also recognizes that addressing young people’s needs is central to creating conditions for an enduring peace in the region.”
In July 2004 this project won a $30,000 prize in a competition for
Best Practices sponsored by UN Habitat and Dubai Municipality. The 10 winners from around the world were recognized “to have made outstanding contributions to improving the quality of life in cities and communities around the world.” In a letter to congratulate the organizations and individuals working on the IT for Youth project, Queen Rania of Jordan wrote “ICT4Youth is a tremendous example of the power of international partnership between public, private and governmental organizations.”
Basem is currently leading a new project for the Rule of Law with the Ministry of Justice in Jordan. |
