On
November 20, 2002, representatives of the
governments of Malta and Switzerland signed the
statute of the DiploFoundation, a joint initiative
for the promotion of information and
communications technology and its application in
the study, teaching and practice of diplomacy. The
foundation, which will have its official seat at
the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies at
the University of Malta, will carry out its
activities worldwide.
The governments of Malta and Switzerland are
pleased that through the establishment of the
foundation, their fruitful and harmonious
cooperation in the field of diplomatic studies,
initiated twelve years ago with the creation of
the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies,
will gain a new dimension.
With its new status as a foundation, Diplo expands
its capacity to assist all countries, especially
those with limited human and financial resources,
to participate meaningfully in international
affairs. This will be carried out mainly through
the use of information and communications
technology for education and diplomatic training,
research on the impact of information and
communications technologies on international
relations and the development of new tools for
diplomatic activities.
The Foundation will have a presence in Geneva and
continue to cooperate closely with the Graduate
Institute of International Studies. It will offer
its services to the government of Switzerland
which will host the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) Geneva in 2003.
