DiploFoundation was one of the supporting organisations behind the UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) training course on Internet Governance for African policy-makers. Held from 2-6 July 2006, this course was launched under the framework of the UN Development Account and was also supported by the Canadian e-Policy Resource Centre (CePRC) and
ICANN.
Thirty-five African Anglophone permanent secretaries, directors and advisors participated in the course. Also present were representatives from Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The training, held in the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, aimed to develop the skills and knowledge required for policy-makers to participate meaningfully in the global debate on Internet Governance and ICT for development, in particular the use and exploitation of the Internet to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
A second course will be delivered during the second half of 2006 for Francophone member States and online courses will be available before the end of the year.
The knowledge acquired from the training is aimed at assisting African policy-makers to participate in the debate on ICT for development at national, regional and international levels. The courses should facilitate meaningful contributions to the newly-established Internet Governance Forum and the Global Alliance on ICT and Development, both created by the UN Secretary General at the request of member States.
