The African Preparatory Meeting on Internet Governance, entitled “Africa on the Road to Athens,” was attended by policy makers and experts from African countries. As part of this meeting, Diplo conducted a workshop on diplomatic and policy making aspects of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) on 19 September. During the four-day meeting participants addressed the main issues to be discussed at the Internet Governance Forum, including openness, access, diversity and security.
The meeting highlighted the significance of capacity building on all levels, including access to the Internet as well as security, diversity and openness of the Internet. The meeting recommended the annual convention of an African Internet Governance Forum (AIGF). It also recommended the encouragement of establishing national taskforces and the setting of national strategies for Internet Governance. Participants highlighted the importance of concerting African efforts and coordinating African stances on all levels to address common challenges ahead.
