Web Management and Diplomacy
For Information Officers or PROs involved in the development of websites, an overview of the issues and constraints surrounding web design, and an awareness of issues such as usability and standardisation, will help to produce and maintain websites of a higher standard. We will be looking at methodologies for web management and share experiences in introducing greater functionality and usability in web sites.
Information Management in Government and International Organisations
Organisations that have launched an Internet presence have found that beyond the technology and technical aspects of a website, a great deal of thought and effort goes into the management of information. At an administrative level, organisations are currently trying to restructure their approach to be more user-centered in the delivery of information and services over the Internet.
The Role of the Internet in Diplomacy and International Relations
We will be examining the role the Internet plays in the unfolding of events in international relations and how different organisations use the Internet effectively.
The presence of the Internet is becoming a significant factor in international affairs. We will be looking at how the Internet can facilitate in establishing new modes of International cooperation and negotiation.
In using technology create new models for diplomatic interaction and cooperation, we will be assessing the viability of the idea of a virtual embassy in our workshop session. We will define the possible scope and functions of the virtual embassy, the main advantages of operating at a virtual level, and its limitations. And also examine whether there is any specific advantage in virtual embassies for developing countries. Could virtual embassies help overcome the digital divide?
Internet, Security and Diplomacy
Internet security is a topic that receives a great deal of attention, yet the issues surrounding Internet security are not always clear. Diplomats would benefit from an understanding of what Internet security entails and an awareness of security measures that can be taken to limit their level of exposure.
The whole notion of security seems to go against the whole concept of open systems and access that the Internet promotes. Representatives from international organizations such as the UN and WHO share their experiences on how they manage their information. What security measures they take in keeping their information both secure and widely available.
Internet and the Law
The use of the Internet as a medium of diplomatic communication brings into review existing legal structures. Can treaties now be drafted and signed over the internet? We will be examining what it would take for email and the Internet to become official channels of diplomatic communication.
