Organisational and Professional Cultures – Theoretical Background

  • What are the specific features and dimensions of organisational and professional cultures?
  • What are the similarities and differences between national and organisational cultures?
  • How do these interact/interface with national cultures?

Diplomatic Professional Culture

  • What are the specific features of the diplomatic professional culture?
  • Do these differ from one country to another, or are there common features?

Case Studies: International Organisations, NGOs, and other Institutions
Papers in this category should discuss the organisational culture of a selected organisation, focussing on:

  • specific features of the organisational culture;
  • specific linguistic features – terminology, grammar, language choice – that form part of the organisational culture;
  • what diplomats should know in order to interact successfully with this organisation.

Another approach would be to analyse the inter-professional communication which took place during one of the interdisciplinary UN conferences of the 1990s: Rio – environment, Cairo – population, Beijing – gender rights; or a similar event.

Translation between Professional and Organisational Cultures

  • When, in diplomatic practice, is “translation” between different professional and organisational cultures necessary?
  • How can diplomats prepare for this kind of intercultural communication?

Domestic Communication

  • What are the factors involved in this relatively new area of diplomatic communication?
  • Which new groups do diplomats need to communicate with?
  • What are the specific organisational cultures of these groups?

New Approaches to Diplomatic Training

  • What skills do diplomats need to interact with different organisational and professional cultures?
  • How can training for diplomats teach them these required new skills?
  • Multistakeholder approach to diplomatic training; opening diplomatic training institutions to other professions which are involved in diplomatic activities (NGOs, journalists, business, etc.): can this approach help diplomats to better prepare for a career involving a variety of forms of intercultural communication?
